9 boxes Linear Feet (The International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers was first organized in 1891, as the National Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, in St. Louis, Missouri. As a craft union affiliated with the American Federation of Labor, the NBEW was composed chiefly of electricians employed in the construction industry. By 1899, as technology advanced and opened the electrical industry to new classes of workers, the Brotherhood had expanded its membership and extended its influence into Canada, becoming the IBEW. Local Union 459 of the IBEW was organized in Johnstown, Pennsylvania. The jurisdiction of Local Union 459 included utility work performed by employees of utility companies in the Johnstown, Somerset, and Indiana operating areas, as well as electrical manufacturing work in the Johnstown area. The International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, Local Union 459 papers are housed in nine archival boxes. The collection is comprised of labor union papers dating from 1950-1987. These papers include copies of agreements, minute books, seniority lists souvenir programs of labor celebrations, policy books and some correspondence. This collection also contains photocopies of the following notebooks: Summary of Grievance Arbitration, Contract Changes 1950-1987, and Agreements between PA Electric Company and LU 459-30-1124. Along with the material pertaining to Local Union 459, many items pertaining to Local Unions 1138 & 1138B are included in this collection.)
