Extent
1 box Linear Feet (The Committee to Save John Sutton Hall was formed in 1975 to prevent the planned demolition of the first original building on campus. Originally built in 1874-1875, the main building was named John Sutton Hall in 1903 by the Indiana State Normal School Board of Trustees in memory of the board’s first president, John Sutton (1814-1877). By the 1970s, John Sutton Hall had been in use for a century, and it was in need of restoration, maintenance, and modernization. As a result of the Committee to Save John Sutton Hall, the building was designated a historic landmark, restored, and continues to serve IUP as administrative and faculty offices and a central meeting place on campus. This collection documents the struggle to preserve John Sutton Hall, and the historic preservation and restoration that was required to restore the building to its original state when it was built in 1875. The current floor plan of John Sutton Hall closely resembles the original design of the building. Several later additions and annexes including Thomas Sutton Hall were removed during the renovation of John Sutton Hall in 1975-1976, and the construction of the Patrick J. Stapleton, Jr. Library Complex in 1979-1981.)
