2 boxes Linear Feet (Samuel Richard Loboda (1916-1978) was a native of Homer City, Pennsylvania. He graduated from Indiana State Teachers College in Indiana, Pennsylvania, in 1936. Loboda founded the United States Army Chorus in 1956 and served as director and commanding officer of the U. S. Army Band “Pershing’s Own” from July 1, 1964 to March 11, 1976. Loboda entered the U. S. Army in 1941 and entered the field of military music two years later. He graduated from the U. S. Army Music School in 1943, and served as executive officer of the School until he was assigned to duty in the Philippines and Japan. After World War II, Loboda returned to Washington, DC as executive officer and assistant leader of the U. S. Army Band. He composed and arranged more than 600 scores of music. He composed official marches for the Kiwanis International, the American Legion, and the National Association of Broadcasters. For the 101st Airborne Division, he composed “Screaming Eagles March” and “The Arrow and the Star March” for the Combat Developments Command. In 1965, Loboda was elected president of the American Bandmasters Association. In 1971, Colonel Loboda was awarded the IUP Alumni Citation, and he received an honorary doctorate from IUP in 1975. This collection represents the material donated by the estate of Colonel Samuel Richard Loboda and information collected about his military career including awards, citations, correspondence, memorials, and plaques.)
