26 Broadsides Linear Feet (Dr. Charles McCollester became director of Pennsylvania Center for the Study of Labor Relations at IUP in 1986 and was a Professor in the Department of Industrial and Labor Relations (now the Department of Employment and Labor Relations) at Indiana University of Pennsylvania (IUP) from 1991 until his retirement in 2008. He earned three degrees in philosophy including his PhD (1970) from the University of Louvain in Belgium. Dr. McCollester came to IUP in 1986, when he was hired as Associate Director of the Pennsylvania Center for the Study of Labor Relations. In 1991, he began teaching in the Department of Industrial and Labor Relations and in 1996, he began a three-year tenure as director of the National Environmental Education and Training Center at IUP. In 1999 and 2000, Dr. McCollester organized and taught in the IUP Summer in Poland program at Adam Mickiewicz University in Poland and he has conducted research and/or consultation work in Sweden (1989), Poland (1991), Haiti (1995, 2003, and 2004) and Nicaragua (2000). Dr. McCollester is a published labor historian and activist and his research interests include Comparative and International Labor Relations, Collective Bargaining, Negotiations, Alternative Work Organization, Labor and Community Based Economic Development, Workplace Safety and Health. He retired from the Department of Industrial and Labor Relations in May 2008. Dr. McCollester has directed or contributed to several grant-funded projects, including those funded by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, the City of Duquesne, the Bureau of Workers' Compensation of the Pennsylvania Department of Labor and Industry, the Pennsylvania MILRITE Council, NEETC, Inc., and the State System of Higher Education. The Pennsylvania Center for the Study of Labor Relations at IUP was established in 1976, and one of its missions is to meet the immediate needs of Pennsylvania unionists, and it has been allied with the Labor Education Institute of the State System of Higher Education since 1999. The Industrial and Labor Relations Center trained Pennsylvania workers and their unions to effectively deal with highly trained management representatives across the bargaining table and in the day-to-day workplace relationship. In 2004, Dr. Charles McCollester received the IUP Sponsored Programs Award for Outstanding Achievement in Public Service from the School of Graduate Studies and Research. One of his most recent publications of note is The Point of Pittsburgh: Production and struggle at the Forks of the Ohio (Call Number: HD 8085 .P58 M33 2008) celebrates Pittsburgh’s 250th anniversary. Dr. McCollester told the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, “For 50 or 75 years, this city was one of the most productive places in the world. Just as production was impressive – in diversity and amount of goods – the labor struggle was just as intense.” Dr. McCollester has served as president of the Battle of Homestead Foundation and the Pennsylvania Labor History Society. The Charles McCollester Broadside Collection represents many radical and new-age publications, newspapers, ideas, organizations and groups including the Black Panthers, Communism, Cuba and the Soviet Union, Vietnamese Liberation Fighter, anarchy, fascism, and the legalization of marijuana. His collection consists of many posters and newsletters of the radical movements and counterculture of the 1960s and 1970s.
