3 boxes Linear Feet (John Edward Merryman was born on May 7, 1936. He attended the Bob Jones University in Greenville, South Carolina, where he graduated in 1961 earning a BA and later an MA in Religion. He also spent his summers attending the Winona Lake School of Theology continuing his studies until he began attendance at the University of Pittsburgh to attain a Ph.D. in Education. Then during the year of 1965, Merryman became an instructor of education at Gettysburg College. He later became Assistant Professor at Geneva College, Lecturer at Pennsylvania State University. In 1967, he came to Indiana University of Pennsylvania to teach the Foundations of Education. Merryman earned his Ph.D. from the University of Pittsburgh in 1968. His Ph.D. dissertation was entitled Indiana University of Pennsylvania: from private normal school to public university. In 1976, Dr. Merryman published his book The Indiana story, 1875-1975: Pennsylvania’s first state university, coinciding with IUP’s centennial anniversary. He was also the first faculty member at IUP to present as part of the Six O’Clock Series on February 7, 1977. Dr. Merryman retired from teaching the Foundations of Education in 1997-1998. The John Merryman Collection is housed in three archival boxes and the collection contains information on several different organizations that he was involved in throughout his professional career. This collection includes Texts, Articles, Teaching materials, videos, awards, and overhead sheets from the span of John Merryman's career.
