4 boxes Linear Feet (Dr. Joseph M. (J. M.) Uhler (1881-August 17, 1947) was born in Elizabeth, Pennsylvania. He earned a Normal School Teaching Certificate from Shippensburg, and BA, MA, and Doctor of Education degrees from the University of Pittsburgh. Dr. Uhler served as the supervising high school principal in Cresson, Pennsylvania in 1907-1908. He became principal and later the superintendent of schools at Conemaugh High School. He joined the Education Department at Indiana State Normal School in 1925, which became Indiana State Teachers College (ISTC) in 1927. During his tenure, he served as Director of Student Teaching and Placement and Dean of Instruction before being appointed as College President in 1942. He was president of ISTC during World War Two, and he was in this position until his death on August 17, 1947. Uhler Hall was named in his memory in 1964. Dr. Uhler was a leading member of the Presbyterian Church of Pennsylvania, and he often led the Sunday Evening Union Vesper Service at the First Presbyterian Church of Indiana. He was a member of the Pennsylvania State Educators Association, the Indiana Hospital Board of directors, the Community Chest Fund board of directors, and the advisory board of the YMCA. Dr. Uhler was also a past president of the Kiwanis Club, and he served as the first director of the Central Western District of Pennsylvania State Educators Association. The Joseph M. Uhler papers are housed in three archival boxes and the collection represents Dr. Uhler’s years as a faculty member and later President of Indiana State Teachers College. His papers include a Master's Thesis, programs, correspondence, newspaper articles, photographs, scrapbooks, speeches, and other miscellaneous items. The collection dates from 1928 to 1964.)
