21 boxes Linear Feet (Gabriel N. Alexander (March 1, 1910-September 14, 2007) was an independent arbitrator, attorney, and adjunct professor of labor arbitration. He earned his JD from the University of Michigan (1933), and he was a partner in the law firm of Alexander & Alexander from 1933-1948. He served as a hearing officer for the Automotive Section of the U.S. War Labor Board from 1945-1946. Alexander was Chairman of the General Motors (1948-1954) and Chrysler Boards of Arbitration as well as Jones and Laughlin Steel Company which was founded as American Iron Company in 1852. Alexander also served as permanent arbitrator for Bethlehem Steel, American Airlines, International Harvester Company, and John Deere. Gabriel Alexander served as an arbitrator for several important cases including General Motors Corporation vs. the International Union, United Automobile, Aerospace and Agricultural Implement Workers of America (UAW) (1948-1954), Bower Roller Bearing Company vs. UAW (1956-1959), and Chrysler Corporation vs. UAW; impartial chairman for Jones & Laughlin Steel Company vs. United Steelworkers of America (USWA) (1960-1961), Major League Baseball Clubs vs. Players Association (1972-1974), Clark Equipment Company vs. UAW (1966-1971), and Armco Incorporated vs. USWA; arbitrator for Bethlehem Steel Company vs. USWA (1954-1955); permanent arbitrator for International Harvester vs. UAW (1964-1976), and John Deere Horicon Works vs. UAW (1968-1971). Additionally, Alexander served as a member on arbitration panels for General Motors Corporation vs. United Rubber, Cork, Linoleum and Plastic Workers of America, Greyhound Bus Lines vs. Amalgamated Transit Union, American Airlines Corporation vs. Airline Stewards and Stewardesses Association, and U.S. Steel Corporation vs. Salaried Employees Association. Gabriel Alexander, arbitrator for Armco Steel Corporation and United Steelworkers of America (USWA), donated over 400 arbitration cases and material from Armco steel plants nationwide (1976-1988) on January 12, 1989. The bulk of the Gabriel Alexander collection includes information from 1976-1988 and consists of 21 archival boxes. Each of the 400 arbitration cases is complete and contain briefs, grievance reports, and transcripts of court proceedings and arbitration decisions. Gabriel Alexander later donated IRRA Annual Proceedings (1948-1986) and Armco Steel Corporation agreements with their nationwide steel plants. This collection is an important addition to IUP's growing industrial and labor history archives. Note: Gabriel N.
